For our 35th anniversary, Mark and I decided to get away to the high desert of Santa Fe, hoping for exceptional hiking, food, and music. We found the hiking we wanted at Bandelier National Monument. Back in 2005, we had hiked here as a family, but we set out on different trails this time -- one that led to dramatic rocky vistas and falls (I’m the tiny yellow dot in the lead photo), and the other to tall ladders leading to a high cliff dwelling (the alcove house). We hiked past lower cave dwellings and the ruins of stone houses where the Pueblo people lived for centuries. There are about 3000 archeological sites in Bandelier, and we tried to imagine the life the Pueblo led in these gorgeous but intimidating surroundings. And knowing how this place fascinated Stephen on our last trip, we spread some of his ashes among the mountains. The men in our family love the iconic music -- from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, of course.
