Alison Krauss sings about the allure of the road, that as long as they keep building roads, she’ll keep moving. Mark and I feel that way about our travels these days. We took a Southern trek this October that stretched from nearby Fredericksburg, Texas to Oxford, Mississippi to Lake Village, Arkansas. One weekend we were spending time with Elizabeth and Andrew at Rose Hill Manor and Enchanted Rock, and the next, with the ghosts of Faulkner in Oxford and Matthew and Brendan in Lake Village. While in Fredericksburg, we attended the Hill Country Memorial hospital gala with Mark. While in Oxford, we had dinner at City Grocery and had lunch with Matthew’s friend Brian, after stopping by Manning Way at Ole Miss for Mom, and finally Square Books, voted best bookstore in the country. Of course, Faulkner’s home, Rowan Oak -- the lead photo -- was a site of pilgrimage for me. Now I can imagine the woods surrounding Faulkner’s house when I revisit his haunting novels.
