Christmas 2020

Christmas 2020

This Christmas would be Jack’s first Christmas in a sense, the first he would halfway understand, and the last one as the only child of the family. It was a singular Christmas for other reasons: Andrew stood as best man at his brother David’s wedding on December 19, which meant quarantine up to Christmas Eve. We were eager for him to join us. Then it was touch and go whether Matthew would make it to Austin, with his worry about Covid as well. We got the last-minute text from Sharon on the road with Matthew, and you could probably hear our shouts of joy from the street. Having us all together made up for any omissions for our almost-traditional Christmas—sans candlelight mass, Eddie V’s and Greenberg turkey. And Jack would not have known the difference sans presents, either. The gift-giving was more for the adults, and we enjoyed the leisurely Christmas morning, dragging it out as long as possible. For the first time ever, I did not send out Christmas cards but delayed for New Year’s cards instead. May we have a Covid-free Christmas next year!
