Remembering Dad
Mark’s dad lived a long, admirable life, and his family gathered at Pawley’s Island Community Church on April 9th to celebrate his 88 years. It was a beautiful and memorable event. Pastor Don Williams and his wife Ginny gave loving support throughout, from the night of Dad’s passing, and Don’s message at the service was personal in a way only possible from close friendship. How special that David had brought Mom and Dad to his church years ago. He and Debbie and Mark read poems written by Dad, on the subjects of family and nature’s beauty and encouragement. For someone so in awe of everyday wonders, and so devoted to lifting up others and taking care of family, the words rang so true. And then all the photographs and the background music of the slideshow reinforced this idea of a man who lived life fully and joyously. Mark and Debbie had sifted through hundreds of photos to create a tribute to their dad. Up to the night before the service, Mark was listening to music from the Big Band era to find just the right tunes. It all came together for that day. For the music at the service, Tev and Patti Hammel graciously accepted David’s invitation to sing “It is Well with My Soul,” a favorite of Dad’s. And the ending of the service with Elizabeth singing “Amazing Grace” could not have been more perfect. Dad, as much as you loved music, you surely appreciated every musical touch.
